ABOUT MIKE DONOVAN:
BSc (Hons) in Agricultural economics from Reading University 1969, Mike worked as a research consultant for The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) in London on studies concerned with agricuture, including coffee, fertilisers, farm machinery, grain facilities. He editied Retail Business, and gave papers at UNCTAD Conferences in London, Geneva, Madrid and Istanbul.  Involved other international agencies.  Contributor to Encyclopaedia Britannica on Consumerism.
Moving to the Financial Times, Mike edited Professional Administration, wrote for the commodities page, and did freelance work in the agricultural sector.
In 1977 he took over a West Wales dairy farm which was developed and expanded, increasingly with the use of innovative farm methods which he continued to do until 1998
.

In 1992 he started Practical Farm Ideas.  Unique in British agricultural journalism, each issue of the magazine is closely read by thousands of farmers, valued and kept for reference.  It's been an important contributor to the control of costs for a wide group of farmers: "...clearly saving many farmers a great deal of time and money" saays Sir Don Curry.

AIMS AND AMBITIONS
  1. The international expansion of FARM IDEAS so innovations can move easily across international boundaries.
  2. The development of the concept of collecting and disseminating novel ideas in farming in the developing world
  3. Educating farmers to understand the basic economics behind farm investment - to see behind the marketing gloss on new products and developments.
  4. To attract partners to the business with similar ambitions, who could accelerate progress.
CAUSES AND EFFECTS

The community is a net beneficiary.
1. Redundant machinery is recycled without being transported miles and heavily processed. Scrap axles, bearings tyres and so on find a second use.
2. Workshop projects increase the demand for local village blacksmiths, fabricators as well as farm staff. They generate money which is kept in the community
3. It provides the farmer constructors with a sense of pride. Young people realise they can use their hands and brains to create something new and functional. They get that buzz every time they use their home built machine (the home made cake syndrome).

Creating similar communities in other parts of the world, and joining these for the good of the international farming community, is a valuable and important goal.

Editorial - send us pictures or descriptions of farm innovations by email or through the post. A follow up phone discussion or email is then needed for the text.
