Using www.farmideas.co.uk : Developing your farm ideas |
| Q: | I have designed and built an extremely useful farm machine. I would like to get some commercial benefits from it.
| | A: | There are various ways you can go about this. Much depends on the machine you have developed, and also on your willingness and ability to invest in your own idea.
You must also be aware there are companies, especially patent agents, lawyers, who are very willing to help you in exchange for fees, which can mount up to significant sums of money.
Patents are easy to sell to enthusiastic people whose understanding of the way they work is incomplete. It should be remembered that only a very small fraction of patents perform the function which those who take them out expect. Many are for ideas which never reach the marketplace. Others are ideas which are 'designed around' by other companies. Still more can be infringed, but the patent holder has not the resources to challenge and contest it. Many patents are effectively expensive wall paper.
Patents are vital in the world of chemistry, electronics. Areas where individual developments are better defined and where there is big money to be both made and invested. In farming, the new developments are less easy to define, and the potential gains a fraction of those in some other industries.
