Each magazine has some useful tips, and the writing isn't biased towards manfacturers - it gives an independent view of things. I value its practicality.

Cattle Pens - Their Layout & Construction

£12.95 includes UK P&P

The purpose of this book is to provide the farmer with a flexible and secure means of penning cattle. The system has been used successfully to winter store cattle and also young bulls. The system has a number of advantages over alternatives which are commonly used on farms today.

COST

Using your own labour makes the farmer's outlay a fraction of any other system. Your steal comes direct from your local merchant. You save on distributors' margins, on the transport of the fabricated goods from factory to farm and on all the management costs built in to a factory made product.

DESIGN

The penning design we have developed has been in use for two season and has trouble free when used for cattle from 4 to 18 months. It works. You can dismantle it quickly and clean out a whole shed without having to avoid posts and rails the whole time. As the dung builds up, so you can move the rails up without trouble, normally with the cattle still in the pen.

LAYOUT SCHEMES

Different farms obviously have different needs. The number of cattle you need to house, the food you will be using, your muck and slurry handling systems etc. Our layouts are guaranteed to give any farmer food for thought. Good planning at the outset will repay the time taken over and over again.

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS:

It's not the building which takes the time in most projects, it's working out the design. And then finding that you haven't got the right piece in the workshop when you want it.

THE BUILD IT YOURSELF

design lists the part required for each component and tells you what to measure and where to weld.

SKILLS

The skills and equipment needed to construct the system are no more than those found on most farms.

SAFETY

Cutting, welding and fitting steel should always be done safely. Always wear goggles when using the disc cutter and always wear an eyeshield when welding. File or grind off sharp edges of steel.
