Self feeding silage is something few people want to admit to. It's dropped off the screen in Britain, surpassed by diet mixers Self feeding silage may have been eclipsed by diet feeders, but their costs will never be able to match the system which has the animals removing feed from the silage face using their own teeth. Self feeding has it's management problems - small, timid and old cows not having the kind of push to get to the silage face and get their fair share; high silage clamps being so undermined the face breaks away and damages or even kills cows; slurry from the feed yard seeping under the barrier and into the feed; cows fighting over seams of the most palatable stuff......
